I’m taking a non-credit weekend course at UNO in beginning birdwatching. There were two classroom sessions and the other four are field trips (immersion learning at it’s best, eh?). The first field trip was March 14th, to Audubon Park. It was quite interesting even though I’ve been to the park many times [...]

Friday I went back to Fontainbleau hoping the owlets were still around, and the eagles. Both were. The owlets have flown and moved into another, less “open” tree and it’s definitely a trick to spot them! They blend right into the Spanish moss and live oak leaves. I got a few decent [...]
The first baby of the year born at Audubon Zoo, born January 8th, is a Giant Anteater. Apparently the baby will cling to mom Anita for nearly a year! The little anteater will not get a name until the zoologists determine its gender (which they should be able to do soon).

I couldn’t resist posting this shot…. watching a swan take off is most intriguing – it really looks like the big, heavy bird will never get in the air, and yet, they always seem to be successful! (click image for full-size)

I spent an hour there the other day, watching the egrets build nests, and got a couple of decent photos! the birds were very industrious, and it interesting to see one egret bring a twig back to its nest, where [...]
And it was back to Fontainebleu today! I really just can’t help it, since I know the owls are up there growing and doing owl-ish things, LOL; go ahead and call me silly (Ranger Steve knows me by now and probably thinks that in his head, but is too polite to say so!). [...]
Ok, I shot this in RAW and I’m still learning how to do the post-processing to get it to be a good looking jpeg… so unfortunately for now it’s a bit noisy… but when I figure out what to do I will repost! In any case, between the 7th and 14th, the little owl [...]
Last weekend was an adventure. From New Orleans, drove to Abita Springs to check out an eagle nest that a friend had confirmed existed… however, it didn’t – the snag the nest was in blew down during Hurricane Gustav! However, there was a Nature Conservancy office, and Tom there was very helpful and [...]

I took “the big lens”, and the extender, to the Audubon Zoo yesterday since it was a beautiful sunny day here in New Orleans. I decided to practice manual focus, which is definitely not a forte of mine. I left the exposure settings on auto so I could [...]
