Ooh, I know you’re surprised to hear the crayons melted.

Box of crayons on the dash

And what it looked under the box:

I didn’t plan for it much except to put a sheet of folded paper under them (a legal size normal-paper brochure), which wasn’t enough. This is the wax under the brochure:

wax on dash

The paper did absorb a lot of wax - it literally became translucent waxed paper in its entirety - but the folds weren’t enough to contain the remainder and the dyes, and that was fluid enough to leak through the hinge of the glovebox and into the upper compartment. I had lots of cleaning to do… but wasn’t this all Blair’s idea?

And finally, a photo inside the box - I got pretty messy just trying to open the box with all the melted wax; next time I will know to do this stuff when I’m home and/or near a sink and soap.

  1. I guess I should admit to some culpability on this one. After all, I did mention the possibility of melting crayons in one of my responses to the melted cup.

But I also mentioned that you should put something under them. I clearly recognized that there was a risk that the wax would become liquid and run and suggested taking counter measures. Why did you use plain paper? Why not foil with edges? There’s clearly some shared responsibility.

On the cleanup angle, you might want to try putting a paper towel in the glovebox with something on top to hold it in the wax. Leave it in place for a day or two and take it out while the car’s still stifling hot.

So what’s the next item on the experimental docket?

  2. Eh, I was in a rush to get back into the AC! I would have used a plate if I’d thought about it.

It’s mostly cleaned up now; I’ve already got paper towels in there to absorb the remnants.

Not sure what’s next. It’s also been (comparatively) cool the last few days - lots of rain so it’s only about 75 F.

  3. Perfect! Now’s the time to try baking cookies in the car. Even if they don’t cook, the dough’s still tasty!

  4. Ya know, I never really did much like cookie dough. More for you, I guess! :-D
